Are you in a state that drinks the most beer?

I know for many of us, having a claim to fame such as the state with the most beer drinkers may seem like having a notch under your belt.

Yes, I will admit, I would love to walk around shouting from the top of my lungs, that my state has a population of beer-drinking residents, but I must come clean and let everyone know, I do not live in one of these states.

According to Christina Smith with TheDrinkBusiness.com, the 10 states with the most beer drinkers are…. drum roll, please.

Here are the top 10 states that drink the most beer in America:

  1. Montana – perhaps a surprising first place, but Montana consumes 40.8 units of beer consumed per capita and has 92 active breweries.
  2. New Hampshire – this relatively small state packs a punch, consuming 39.8 units of beer per capita and boasting 91 breweries.
  3. North Dakota – a smaller state still, but North Dakota drinks 38.2 units of beer per capita.
  4. South Dakota – though South Dakota has a population of less than one million and only 22 breweries, it drinks 38.2 units of beer per capita.
  5. Maine – Maine has an impressive 133 active breweries and consumes 33.8 units of beer per capita.
  6. Vermont – With a population of just over 600,000, Maine still boasts 68 breweries and 33.3 units of beer consumed per capita.
  7. Texas – this huge state, with a population of just under 30 million, boasts 344 active breweries and consumes 30.9 units of beer per capita.
  8. Wisconsin – Wisconsin has 205 breweries but actually drinks more per capita than Texas, at 33.6 units of beer.
  9. Nebraska – Nebraska has 55 breweries and consumes 32.5 units of beer per capita.
  10. Nevada  – and finally, Nevada makes 10th place thanks to its 33.2 units of beer consumed per capita.

So if you are planning your beer travels this year, maybe give these states a look. Also if you live in one of these states and want me to know how great your state’s beer is, well go ahead and let me know, I do not mind being an impartial judge.

Happy Drinking everyone, stay safe, sip, savor repeat, and cheers!

A quick note on how hops work.

Hops are a critical ingredient in many beers, adding flavor, aroma, and bitterness. The hop plant is a climbing, herbaceous plant that is native to Europe, Asia, and North America. The female flowers of the plant, also known as “hops,” are used in brewing.

The hop plant grows best in temperate climates and requires a lot of sunlight and well-draining soil. Once the hop plants reach maturity, they are ready to be harvested. This typically occurs in the fall, when the hop cones are at their peak of ripeness.

During the hop harvest, the cones are picked by hand or machine and are then dried to preserve them for use in brewing. The dried hops are usually ground into a powder or pellet form, which makes them easier to use in the brewing process.

In brewing, hops are added at different stages of the process to achieve different flavors and aromas. Hops added early in the boil contribute bitterness, while those added later in the boil or during fermentation contribute aroma. The type of hops and the amount used can greatly impact the final flavor and aroma of the beer.

I hope this information about the hop process in beer brewing was helpful! Let me know if you have any other questions.
